Novartis: alliance with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
(CercleFinance.com) - Novartis has struck an alliance with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop drugs for treating infectious diarrheal disease, the Swiss drugmaker said.
Under the terms of the deal, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide 6.5 million dollars to support Novartis' drug candidate for the treatment of cryptosporidiosis.
Diarrheal diseases are one of the leading causes of childhood mortality globally, resulting in approximately 525,000 deaths each year, Novartis said.
Amongst them, cryptosporidiosis is the second leading cause of infectious diarrhoea in children of under 2 years old.
