(CercleFinance.com) - Novartis said on Monday that chief medical officer Vasant Narasimhan will succeed chief executive officer Joseph Jimenez, who would be retiring from February 2018.

Joe Jimenez, who has been CEO since 2010, joined the company in 2007. He first led the consumer health division, before being appointed head of Novartis Pharmaceuticals.

From February 2018, he will be available for advice and support at the request of the chairman of the board of directors or the CEO until he officially retires from Novartis on 31 August, 2018.

Vasant Narasimhan - who has a medical degree from Harvard Medical School - has held numerous leadership positions across Novartis in commercial, drug development and strategy roles.

Before joining Novartis in 2005, he worked at consulting firm McKinsey.
