BlackBerry: second-quarter exceeds expectations

(CercleFinance.com) - BlackBerry reported higher second-quarter profit on Friday as lower operating costs helped the Canadian technology group offset a fall in sales.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company has exceeded its financial expectations for the quarter, boosting its net income to 43 million dollars, compared to 19 million dollars a year ago.

Revenue fell to 210 million dollars, from 238 million dollars a year ago, but operating expenses reached only 122 million dollars, down from 153 million dollars in the same period last year.

In particular, BlackBerry posted record high quarterly revenue for BlackBerry Technology Solutions, its unit which combines its most innovative technology, driven by growth in the automotive business.

Encouraged by opportunities on the fast-growing enterprise of things market, the firm also re-affirmed its outlook for fiscal 2019.

The New York-listed shares were up 2.5% in pre-market trading on Friday.
