J&J: EMA investigates thrombosis cases in Covid vaccine

(CercleFinance.com) - The Pharmacovigilance and Safety Committee (PRAC) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) today announced the start of a safety review into thrombosis following vaccination with Johnson & Johnson's Janssen anti-Covid serum.

Four serious cases of unusual blood clots with low platelet counts have been reported following vaccination with Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. One case occurred during a clinical trial and three cases occurred during the deployment of the vaccine in the US. One of these cases proved to be fatal, the PRAC says.

For the time being, Janssen's vaccine is only being used in the United States, but it is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks in Europe, where it was approved for marketing on 11 March.

The link between the vaccination and these events has not been proven, but the PRAC promises more information as soon as the evaluation is completed.
