Airbus: working on a hydrogen aircraft engine
(CercleFinance.com) - Airbus has said that it is developing a hydrogen engine that it considers as one of the potential solutions to equip its zero-emission aircraft that will enter service by 2035.
Airbus will begin ground and flight testing of this fuel cell engine architecture on its ZEROe demonstration aircraft by the middle of the decade.
If the technology goals were met, fuel cell engines could be capable of powering 100 passenger aircraft with a range of about 1,000 nautical miles, the group said.
By continuing to invest in this technology, we are giving ourselves additional options that will inform our decisions on the architecture of our future ZEROe aircraft, which we expect to begin developing by 2027-2028, it added.
