bp: marine biofuel trial with Rio Tinto

(CercleFinance.com) - bp announced on Monday that it will collaborate with Rio Tinto in a trial to supply biofuel to the mining group's ships.


Under the terms of the one-year trial, the British energy group will supply Rio Tinto with its B30 bio-diesel, made up of 30% fatty acid methyl esters.

This mixture, derived from diesel, reduces the carbon emissions of ships by 26% compared to traditional marine fuels, bp said.

The trial will be conducted on the RTM Tasman vessel, which makes transatlantic deliveries as well as Atlantic and Pacific connections.

The project is intended to help Rio Tinto achieve its goal of starting to operate net zero ships by 2030, before achieving zero CO2 deliveries by 2050.
