Rio Tinto: green electricity purchase contract for RBM

(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto reports that its Richards Bay Minerals company, a specialist in the extraction and refining of heavy mineral sands, has signed its third power purchase agreement with Red Rocket South Africa for phase 1 of the Overberg wind farm in South Africa.


Construction of the wind farm will start in the first half of 2025, with commissioning scheduled for December 2026.

RBM will benefit from 230 MW of the 380 MW total capacity, helping to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 30% (0.7 Mt CO2e).
With this project, RBM has accumulated around 500 MW of renewable energy purchase agreements.

In 2022, RBM signed for the Bolobedu solar project (130 MW) and in 2024 for the Khangela Emoyeni wind farm (140 MW).

These initiatives should enable RBM to reduce its annual emissions by 60% (1.4 Mt CO2e) compared with 2018.
