Getlink: traffic down in July

(CercleFinance.com) - On Tuesday Getlink reported a fall in traffic decline on its shuttles in July, a downturn that comes as the UK economy is beginning to show some signs of weakness.


The operator of the Channel Tunnel said this morning that its passenger shuttles carried 294,044 passenger vehicles last month, down 7% from July 2018.

Getlink explains that passenger car traffic suffered froim an unfavourable calendar effect, with later holiday departures this year.

Truck shuttle traffic was down 10%, affected by the lack of recovery in the automotive market and a fall in consumption in the UK.

These figures come as the British economy contracted by 0.2% in the second quarter, a decline largely due to the prospect of Brexit, economists said.
