Thales: Eross+ towards in-orbit servicing project
(CercleFinance.com) - As part of the Horizon 2020 program, Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), and its partners, have been awarded a project by the European Commission to prepare (phase A/B1) a demonstration of a "Servicer" vehicle in orbit, scheduled for 2026.
Called EROSS+, (European Robotic Orbital Support Services), this new project will be led by Thales Alenia Space, which will supervise the system as a whole.
EROSS+ aims to develop a European solution for in-orbit services to de-orbit space debris, carry out robotic manipulations, extend the operational life of a satellite, refuel, inspect, etc.
With humanity considering the possibility of building lunar bases sometime in the future, On-Orbit Servicing technologies will underpin the solutions developed to transport and assemble the constituent elements.
