BASF: R&D initiative with ENI on biopropanol

(CercleFinance.com) - Eni has announced that it has signed a strategic agreement with BASF: through a joint R&D initiative, both partners aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector.


The cooperation aims to develop a new technology to produce advanced biopropanol from glycerine, a by-product of industrial biodiesel production that Eni will buy from European producers.

The technology that is being developed involves the conversion of glycerine into propanol via an innovative process.

Biopropanol could potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65%-75% in comparison with fossil fuels.
