Volkswagen: group sales down 4.5% in 2021

(CercleFinance.com) - On Wednesday Volkswagen forecast a 4.
5% drop in global sales in 2021, a year marked by serious shortages of semiconductors.

The German carmaker said it sold nearly 8.9 million vehicles last year, compared with just over 9.3 million units in FY 2020.

Sales of the flagship VW brand - which alone accounts for more than half of the group's deliveries - fell by 8% to under 4.9 million.

The detailed annual figures show, among other things, a 28.5% drop in group sales in December, to 713,200 vehicles delivered.

Over the last three months of the year, the drop in group sales was even 31%, including a 34% drop for the VW brand.

In a statement, Volkswagen nevertheless emphasised that it had almost doubled its sales of battery-electric vehicles last year, to 452,900 units, which now represent 7.5% of the group's total sales, almost double to 4% in 2020.

Volkswagen shares were pretty flat in Frankfurt on Wednesday, following these figures.
