ABB: signs 100 million dollar Austrian grid deal

(CercleFinance.com) - The Swiss-Swedish engineering group ABB has penned a deal worth over 100 million dollars to supply gear for the largest electricity grid expansion to date in Austria.

ABB has signed a five-year framework contract with Austrian Power Grid (APG) to supply gas-insulated switchgear for the construction of the transmission grid, the company said.

From the end of 2019 until 2024, ABB's gear will be installed in various substations around the country. As renewable energy is difficult to predict, the network will connect wind power generators in eastern Austria to storage power plants in the western part of the country. It will also transport surplus solar and wind power to storage power plants in the Alps, which act as "green batteries".
